Donghak: The Eastern Learning
Donghak—Eastern Learning—emerged in the mid-19th century, a time when the foundations of East Asian civilization were under profound stress. Yet the name itself points beyond historical circumstance toward something deeper.
“East” is not merely a geographical direction. In the cosmological tradition of the East, it is the direction of new life, the place where the principles of Heaven and Earth are renewed, and civilization is reborn. “Learning” means learning the Dao and its teachings: studying the fundamental Way that governs all of creation and aligning oneself with it in practice.
Donghak was founded on April 5, 1860 (lunar calendar), when the Venerable Choi Su-un received a heavenly mandate from Sangjenim in Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Shilla dynasty. Through this mandate, Donghak proclaimed three core messages for humanity.
The First Message: The Supreme Dao of Mugeuk
The first message announced the opening of a new age of enlightenment through Mugeuk Daedo—the Supreme Dao of Mugeuk. Mugeuk denotes the boundless, ultimate source of all creation and transformation, the inexhaustible wellspring from which Heaven and Earth arise. The Supreme Dao of Mugeuk is the path through which this infinite creative power is cultivated within the human being—awakening the divinity of the creator residing within us.
“Cultivate and purify yourself with the Supreme Dao of Mugeuk and the destiny of the next fifty thousand years will be yours.” (Dojeon 1:8:25)
This Dao represents the mind of the cosmic autumn: a new order of civilization arising from the renewed order of Heaven and Earth.
The Second Message: Gaebyeok—The Great Transformation
The second message declared the coming of Gaebyeok—the great turning point that accompanies the transition from cosmic summer to cosmic autumn. As the Cosmic Year moves into its harvest season, the old structures of civilization give way. Donghak taught that this transition would be heralded by a mysterious disease spreading across the world—a sign that the transformation of Heaven and Earth was at hand.
“The fate of the mysterious disease spreading across the entire world—is this not once again gaebyeok?” (Dojeon 1:8:26)
Gaebyeok is not calamity for its own sake. It is the birth of a new heaven and a new earth—the inevitable passage through which the old age ends and a renewed civilization begins.
The Third Message: The Era of Si-cheon-ju—Serving the Lord of Heaven
Donghak proclaimed the coming era of Si-cheon-ju, the practice of serving and attending Sangjenim, the Lord of Heaven and Earth.
According to Donghak, the being long revered in the heavenly rite tradition of the East for more than nine thousand years — the Ruler of the Universe — would incarnate in the Eastern land as a human being before the time of Gaebyeok to bring salvation to humanity.

Si-cheon-ju Jo-hwa-jeong Yeong-se-bul-mang Man-sa-ji
“Serving the Lord of Heaven who determines the destiny of the Immortal Paradise of Creation-Transformation, I will never forget, throughout all eternity, his infinite grace of bestowing enlightenment into all matters.” (Dojeon 1:8:13)
This teaching affirms that Heaven is not indifferent to the human world. At the decisive turning point of history, Sangjenim Himself comes, and through His advent and dharma, humanity enters the era of God the Father.
Three Messages, One Opening
The heavenly mandate received by Choi Su-un, the Supreme Dao of Mugeuk, the coming of Gaebyeok, and the era of Si-cheon-ju are not separate teachings. They form a single, unified declaration: that humanity stands at the threshold of the greatest transition in the history of civilization—and that the Way, the transformation, and the Ruler of Heaven and Earth have all come to meet us at this hour.
