734–? CE. A Buddhist monk of Korea’s Silla dynasty. Among all who sought dao, only Monk Jin-pyo personally encountered Maitreya Buddha through meditation. His method of meditation (i.e., repentance by beating his entire body with a stone) was so dangerous that subsequent dao seekers were warned by their masters not to replicate it. After Jin-pyo attained enlightenment, he had a vision of the great cataclysm at the time of Autumn Gaebyeok. He fervently prayed that Maitreya Buddha would incarnate in Korea to save humanity from this great upheaval. Jin-pyo spread the Maitreya faith throughout Korea. Jin-pyo’s name means “Symbol of Truth.”
